Do we all love Italian cuisine? Abso-effin-lutely. And what is it we love about it? The simplicity! Owner Vito Martino takes a somewhat minimalist approach towards his restaurant’s cuisine. That’s not to say the dishes lacked anything, but rather that the ingredients were of such high quality only few are needed to perfect these traditional meals, just like nonna’s.

What’s Il Fornello Known For?

Il Fornello Oakville is one of 6 locations scattered throughout the city of Toronto. Serving a variety of classic Italian dishes they’ve recently joined the brunch game as well. Whatever meal you’re feasting on, you can guarantee it’s carb-tastic; from pastas, to pizzas, to eggs benny and charcuterie boards, you’re going to leave Il Fornello satisfied, and probably saying something stereotypical like “mamma mia that was good!”

What did we get?

Carpaccio di Vitello ($14.65)​

Menu Description: thinly sliced, espresso and rosemary crusted veal, with arugula and croutons.

Not all thinly sliced, raw meats are to be trusted, no, no. After all, the wrong cut, the wrong oil, the wrong expiry date can really impact the taste of this dish. Don't let this paper thin meat fool you, what it lacks in size it makes up for in taste.

Gnocchi Alessia ($17.50)​

Menu Description: fior di latte, cherry tomatoes, zucchini in a light pomodoro sauce.

Ah fior di latte, the fancy way to say mozzarella! These little Italian dumplings are so fresh you’ll feel like you took a trip to the European Boot itself.

Pizza Prosciutto ($17.50)

Menu Description: pomodoro sauce, fior di latte, prosciutto, arugula, shaved parmigiano-reggiano.

What’s great about this one is that since the arugula conceals the cheesey pizza below, it can really make you feel like you’re eating a salad! So, enjoy this dish, guilt-free and all; prosciutto counts as protein, fior di latte for dairy, arugula for leafy greens and dough for carbs. You can’t say we’re not health-conscious, amirite?
